24th August 2016

On the hotest day of the year our 500th meeting celebration continued with a lunch at the Queens Head on Maldon's Hythe Quay followed by a

welcome cooling voyage on the local "trip" boat VIKING SAGA. We travelled down river to Mill Beach then turned and contiued upstream  passing the local boatyards and the variety of craft that lined the banks. A "real time" view of our PowerPoint "In our Own Backyard"

Our host, the Ingatestone and Fryerning Community Association kindly gave a free drink at their bar to commemorate our long association.

ROY KITTLE

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of  Roy Kittle one of our valued members.

Roy joined our branch following the demise of London Branch. He was a keen photographer and was a serial winner of our annual photographic competition.

He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.

He had a great interest in both steam trains and shipping. He was often to be found photographing ships locally, on the continent in Canada and Singapore. He made many friends worldwide who still enquire after him. His arthritis which even in the 1980s was troubling him did not prevent him travelling and photographing ships. His last expedition was to photograph ships at Terneuzen in 2008. Following a heart operation he moved into a residential care home, but after a recent fall which seemed to trigger more health problems he moved to a nursing home.

We are sad to announce that Roy's funeral took place on 9th November at a private ceremony at Banbury.

Michael & Joyce Vincent payed their last regular visit to the Mid-Essex Branch in May 2015 before their move to the Liverpool area. We will miss them at our meetings and we wish them well in their new home.

 GEORGE BARRAT

It is with sadness we announce the death of our former member George Barrat who died on 23rd August 2014 aged 92. We send our sympathies to his sons, Graham and Martyn and family.

George went to sea in 1938 and served the war in the British merchant navy and latterly  in the Norweigan merchant fleet. He  spent a short season in 1946 with Eagle Steamers as a saloon steward on board Royal Eagle. He served aboard EMPIRE WINDRUSH which arrived in Tilbury in June 1948 bringing West Indian imigrants to the UK. He was fondly remembered by one of the (then child)passengers on the voyage as the wonnderful steward who gave us children an extra scoop of ice cream. After swallowing the anchor he became a nurse in a local hospital and then a school caretaker. In his retirement he returned to the sea as a volunteer aboard several sail training ships.

His funaral took place on Friday 5th September 2014 at Chelmsford Crematorium.

Maldon & Mersea Island Museum Visits

Our thanks to the curators of both Maldon Museum and Mersea Island Museum for giving us so much of their time and knowledge which made this a very interesting and worthwhile day out for us. For local museums run on mainly a voluntary basis they can both be very proud of their efforts. We presented the Mersea Island Museum with some photographs taken by Mid Essex members of ships laid up in the River Blackwater to help with their collection.

We now also understand the type of content of both museums and hope that we can offer assistance "as and when" in appreciation. Our thanks also to member John Raven and wife Maureen for their assitance with the Maldon visit and for a welcome coffee and cake.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our faithful member ROY LEACH

Roy was our oldest member and at 86 had been an active and regular member of the branch for many years. Roy, through various sources, managed to supply the branch with copies of Lloyds List until they all but ceased “hard copy” publication. Roy also treated us to slide shows of his trips and cruises, his last being in January 2007, “Through the Kiel Canal” on Boudicca. He was also a regular competitor in the annual slide competition. Roy’s last meeting at Ingatestone was November last year and we believed his non attendance over the winter months was due to the poor winter weather conditions. However, six weeks ago he was diagnosed with lung cancer and sadly died of a heart attack following surgery. Roy also devoted a lot of his spare time to the “New Ships” list at the back of Marine news. His expertise in this field will be hard to replace.

We at the Mid Essex Branch will miss his friendliness, his sharp wit and his extensive knowledge and send our deep sympathies to his wife Joyce and all the family.

Roy's funeral was held at a packed Basildon Cremetorium on Monday 17th May 2010 at 12 noon.

Congratulations to our quiz team for achieving FIRST place in the Leslie Sargent Memorial Quiz which was

hosted by Southend Branch on Saturday 10th October 2009.
